Arcing Introductions to Epistles
The introductory greetings of Paul’s epistles can be a challenge to arc, but they shouldn’t be ignored because they are rich with doctrine. A classic example is Galatians 1:1-5 where Paul opens his offensive against the Judaizers’ false gospel by giving a panoramic overview of the true gospel in all its majesty. But what relationships do you apply when arcing an introduction? That’s a tough question, but I find “Series”, “Progression”, and “Idea / Explanation” to be the most helpful.
We’ll take a closer look at our Arc of Galatians 1:1-5 in a future post, in the meantime, what have you found helpful when Arcing introductions to the epistles? You can use the comments section below to post a link to your own arc of one of Paul’s greetings. Arc of Galatians 1:1-5 (KJV / NASB): Link |
“The purpose of Christ’s death,……was not only to bring us forgiveness, but that, having been forgiven, we should live a new life, the life of the age to come.” [Stott, Only One Way, 18]

Esau’s Stew
Lord, please preserve us from trading spiritual treasures (a clean conscience, a good testimony, a pure heart toward God) for momentary physical satisfaction. Teach us to heed Paul’s words to Timothy:
|
Gal 1:1, 3 – Order of Divine Names
Is there any significance in the order of divine names being reversed between these two verse? Is it done to emphasize their equality as both being divine persons? |
Gal 1:1 – dia / apo
What does Paul mean when he describes himself as an apostle through (dia) Jesus Christ and God the Father? Why didn’t he say from (apo) Jesus Christ and God the Father? |
